About GRADA

Australian specialty coffee liqueur, made in Melbourne

GRADA is a single-ingredient espresso martini. Shake it over ice and it is the finished drink. No vodka, no second liqueur, no espresso shot, no syrup.

01)The bottle

The single ingredient espresso martini

An espresso martini usually takes four products: coffee liqueur, vodka, a fresh shot of espresso and sugar syrup. Pull them apart and they come down to three things: coffee, alcohol and sugar.

So we made the whole drink from three ingredients. Specialty grade coffee, hot extracted. Australian made vodka. Sugar syrup. Pour 100ml of GRADA into a shaker full of ice, shake hard and fine strain into a coupe. Nothing else goes in.

IWSR, 2023

Coffee is one of the most loved drinks on earth, and Australia has one of the best specialty coffee scenes anywhere. In the world of spirits, coffee has too often been an afterthought.

Most coffee liqueur is made with commodity beans, extracts and syrups. The category hasn't kept up with the rise of specialty coffee, and none of Australia's coffee culture showed up in it.

GRADA exists to bring the craft, care and culture of Australian specialty coffee into the world of spirits. It is a specialty coffee liqueur made in Melbourne, and it is made to two rules:

  1. 01)Specialty-grade coffee only. Single origin, bought direct and cupped by our Head of Coffee.
  2. 02)Hot extraction, so the liqueur shakes straight into an espresso martini with nothing added.

03)The name

Why it's called GRADA

The name takes a little from Melbourne and a little from Milan. Our coffee and drinks culture started in the cafes and bars of both cities. GRADA is a reminder to take everything that goes into the bottle to the next level.

Melbourne meets Milan.

04)The farm

Grown at Fazenda Pinhal, Minas Gerais, Brazil

GRADA starts in the hills of Minas Gerais, on a sixth-generation family farm where coffee is grown with intention, care and deep respect for the land.

The farm is Fazenda Pinhal, in the south of Minas Gerais. Pedro Gabarra is the sixth generation of his family to farm it, and he runs it with his sister Mariana.

Two varieties go into the bottle. Mundo Novo brings sweetness. Yellow Topaz brings acidity and body. Both are natural and pulp natural processed, which suits Brazil's long dry seasons and gives a fuller body with notes of chocolate and nut. Brazil harvests once a year, from May to August.

05)The roast

Roasted to our recipe, cupped twice

Criteria Coffee, founded by Craig Simon, roasts our coffee to GRADA's own roast recipe. Clara cups every shipment when it lands from the farm, then again after roasting, because coffee changes on the ocean crossing.

06)The extraction

Hot extracted in Melbourne, like a great espresso

Coffee being brewed hot, the way GRADA is extracted

We use hot extraction to capture the character, complexity and rich flavour of our single origin coffee.

We extract at 93°C, the temperature a barista uses to pull an espresso. We control the temperature, the agitation, the bloom and the contact time.

Hot extraction keeps more of the coffee's oils, body and aromatics. That is why GRADA shakes to a proper head of crema, and why it is as good over ice as it is in an espresso martini.

The coffee is blended with Australian vodka to 16% ABV.

Grown in Brazil. Made in Melbourne.

07)After

Made for after

Our love for coffee doesn't stop at 3pm, so we made a coffee ritual for after hours.

GRADA is what comes after. After work. After hours. After dark.

Everyone loves an espresso martini, but GRADA is at its best poured over ice.

Glenn McColl, Drink X, Geelong

Every bottle and every 5 litre bag-in-box of GRADA is brewed, blended and filled at Drink X in South Geelong. Glenn McColl and his team run the extraction, hold the liquid in tank until it settles, and fill each run under the same quality system the biggest beverage brands in the country rely on. We own the recipe. They make sure it tastes the same every time.
